"One of the best parts of any pageant is seeing old friends
and meeting new ones"
Good afternoon Rafa,
It's over now, the 2006 Miss Universe Beauty Pageant! It is hard to believe,
after the rush of energy for the last 19 days. As I was walking to the parking
structure to get my car, I became somewhat emotional and sad, as I call it "post-pageant blues!"
Let me get started, on what occurred yesterday, Sunday the 23rd of July:
It was hot and humid like a summer day in Manila. My various friends and I went
to the Dress Rehearsal, and we left the hotel at 10 am.
I was seated next to my friends in the front section of the Shrine Auditorium.
I felt that the opening number had no energy, but someone told me that it would be
more exciting during the LIVE International telecast (and it was).
At the beginning before it started, we were screamed at, what to and not to do,
during the actual, two-hour timed rehearsal.
The mock 20 semi-finalists were: Guatemala, Sweden, South Africa, Greece,
Japan, Uruguay, Canada, Switzerland, Ecuador, Germany, China, Denmark, Trinidad
and Tobago, France, Colombia, Ireland, Thailand, Argentina, Russia and Angola.
From there, those who made the 10 were: South Africa, France, Ireland, Russia, Uruguay,
Sweden, Germany, Thailand, Greece, Ecuador. The last five countries made the mock top 5.
Those working on the show got the awards for the various other trophy winners.
It was nice to watch. Then it was time to get back to the hotel and have lunch
and primp before leaving for the international telecast.
The Actual Show
I was waiting in front for Annette Cammer of the MUO who had an extra ticket to
the Coronation Ball. I noticed Patricia Lopez and Adriana Tarud Miss Colombia 2005,
doing the LIVE telecast for Caracol, in front of the Shrine; then I understood that
it went inside the Shrine. I was going back and forth to a dear friend in Bogota,
and he was reporting what was going on from his side of the world; it was fun
and exciting.
In the lobby, I had a photo taken of Margaret Gardner of South Africa and MU of 1978.
I had not seen her in person since 1991 at the Coronation Ball in Las Vegas, Nevada.
I was flattered that she remembered who I was. She looked fabulous.
I also noticed the entrance of Wendy Fritzwillam, tall and stunning.
I was sitting again with seven of my pageant friends, and we were somewhat in shock
as the 20 were announced, saying, "Oh my goodness! What happened to so and so,
and why didn't so and so make it, instead of so and so...?" After the shock
passed us by, we were now ready for the competition to begin. (I noticed that
many of the contestants appeared somewhat tired and low in energy.) We were very
pleased with the ten that were announced, but not the final five? (This morning in
the lobby, one of the Colombia fans, Oswaldo, said to me, "They announced the wrong five!")
My only sadness was that Mexico was not amongst the final five. Maybe the judges
needed some eye drops?
I was calling you, Rafa, Carlos in Miami, and also Bogota while the cuts were made.
Carlos was disappointed that El Salvador, Rebecca Iraheta, did not make the cut.
I personally saw her up-close, and she was always full of energy and kind, and had
a sweet smile for everyone.
As we all know, Puerto Rico won the crown, and my best wishes and congratulations
to her, her family and countrymen. I knew that she would do well and place
in the top five, but never saw the crown on her head. This shows you what I know.
Immediately after the crowing, I rushed to the Coronation Ball which was held,
in a room connected to the Shrine, knowing how quickly it would be filled. When I
entered, I just went to the food tables to serve myself, and sat down with a few of
my friends. The contestants started coming in, at a slow pace; not many were wearing
their evening gowns or sashes. I saw Porntip Nakhirunkanok, as she was being interviewed, and
noticed her real diamond jewelry. I saw Amelia Vega. Photos were being snapped away;
a young Venezuelan man recognized me, came up to me, and told me that he has read
all of my reports on CriticalBeauty.com. I also got a few international phone calls
from friends telling me that they saw me on the Telemundo special which was shown prior to
the MU pageant telecast. Soon after it got so crowded and hot, and then I just left.
It was not a pretty picture.
From there I was driven back to the Wilshire Grand and had a coke at the bar,
where they were showing the pageant. Colombia arrived and created a stir
in front of the hotel, with a news camera recording her arrival. Her very
attractive mother was there to greet her back to the hotel. I left the hotel
about 11 and was exhausted from all the energy of excitement. As I was walking
to my car, I felt like Dead Man Walking.
Went I went to bed, we had a new Miss Universe 2006...
Today. Monday.
I got to the hotel about 8:30 am, not wanting to miss to say good-bye to those whom I know.
I was able to get into the 15th Floor Executive Hospitality Room where a continental
breakfast was being served and I saw Annette with Magali Febles who is the national
director for Puerto Rico. I embraced Magali in congratulations for her girl, Zuleyka
Rivera, for winning. Her cell phone kept ringing from everyone in Puerto Rico,
telling her the same, as I did. Then MUO glamour photographer Fadil Berisha asked
how she wanted the photos of Zuleyka taken. (Many of you may not know this, but Magali
is a hairdresser and has one of the leading beauty salons and spa in San Juan.)
From there I went downtown, and met up with a friend Gilberto from Atlanta, Georgia,
at the Grill Restaurant. Many of the contestants started coming in for their final
meal at the hotel, all very casually dressed, with very little make up, if any.
I was on my cell phone talking to my friend when Miss Colombia came in, and I had
her greet my friend there; they both enjoyed talking to each other. I gave El Salvador
many news clippings in which she appeared and told her to cherish them, and that
she would appreciate them more in 30 years than she does today! As the girls left,
they said their tearful good-byes, a yearly scene. I said good-bye to Miss Philippines
and a huge one to Miss Costa Rica to whom I said, "It was such a pleasure to see you again!"
After this, I went to the lobby and it was buzzing away, a few Spanish-language news people,
with cameras and pencils and paper in hand, doing their reporting, all desperate,
for their final news, talking to any family and friends of the contestants.
Also included were the parents and family members of Zuleyka, talking about how it felt,
as it all went down the mother with a huge smile.
One of the best parts of any pageant is seeing old friends and meeting new ones.
As I said good-bye to many today, I had a lump in my throat, and wished them all,
God's blessings.
Just before leaving, I noticed Patricia Lopez (photo left) and got an autograph for Alan Sim, the
president of the Mister Singapore Organization. Patricia is Alan's all-time favorite MU contestant.
She was happy and gracious to have done it for him.
My last good-bye was to Miss Lebanon Gabrielle Bou Rached. Prior to this, she was being
interviewed and asked about her relationship with Miss Israel. She replied, "We never
had anything to do with one another. I am not saying that we did not like each other,
we just left each other alone." Then I asked what her plans were and she said,
"I will just stay here. No one is allowed in or out of Lebanon, but my heart is there
in my country." How did she like the
winner? And she replied, "Well, the judges have spoken, so what can I say?"
After this, I hugged her and wished her all the blessings for her and her country!
Until my next reporting on other beauty pageants, my grateful thanks to all of you who
have read my articles!
Peace to all,

"My prayer is that the best one will win."
Good morning Rafa,
Tonight is the night, for us fans! One of the most important ones of the year.
For the 20 semi-finalists, it will be the biggest thrill of their young lives,
and for five of them, tonight will be the biggest night of their lives. And for one,
it will mean, worldwide acclaim as Miss Universe 2006 - her life will be changed forever.
Yesterday, I had to work so the Wilshire Grand hotel was not graced with my presence.
About 7 PM, Juan Carlos Giraldo, the editor of Estilo for Cromos, the Newsweek-type
magazine of Colombia, came for a photo shoot, along with Monica Villamizar,
periodista unidad investigativa for Caracol television of Colombia, who will be doing
tonight's telecast of MU for Colombia. I was interviewed for it, and they filmed
away, showing my memorabilia, especially that of Luz Marina Zuluaga, Miss Universe
of 1958 of Colombia. Also here along for the ride was Adriana Tarud, last
year's Miss Colombia. Adriana and Patricia Lopez, Miss Colombia 1986, will be
hosting the telecast tonight for the Colombian television audience.
My thoughts last night, and this morning, are all of the hopes, prayers and
positive thinking, of all this year's delegates. My prayer is that the best
one will win.
All of you readers, please know I have so enjoyed writing my reports on this
MU 2006 pageant.
Stay tuned tonight, and enjoy the pageant. Also, there is a two-hour
pre-telecast program on Telemundo. Enjoy that also. You may see me on it!
Long live the spirit of Miss Universe!

"I don't care if she was a Miss Universe. She has to leave."
Hello Rafa,
On Tuesday evening, right after the first round of judging, Scott Grossman said,
with a happy voice, that they needed bodies on Thursday afternoon (12 noon) for
the shooting of the National Costume opening, and that you will be shown, during
the international telecast on this Sunday, 23rd of July.
We all got there about 11:15 and were standing outside of the Shrine, when a
lovely, friendly woman gave us all wrist bans that had various USA flags around it,
and if not worn, we would not be allowed in, she announced.
I was with the Colombian group, so a few of us went to Denny's to have a bite to
eat. As soon as we got back, a male security guard was screaming
to see the wrist bands. He ordered us to place any bags and things in pockets into plastic boxes,
for security checks, and we had to go through a metal detection door way.
It got somewhat hairy, and I told him that he was making me nervous, and he said,
"Good!" I felt that they would ask for a strip search; it was like going to visit
someone in prison, who is on death row.
When we got in, we were in three sections. We were treated abruptly by the other
security guards, telling us what to do. We were ordered to be quiet and to turn off cell
phones because they were filming various contestants in their evening gowns, stating their ages,
and what county they were representing. Most of them were doing dance movements, very effective.
I saw many familiar hotel lobby fans there.
They must have done the opening take about 6 times, telling us to applaud, wave flags,
but not to get up. I was in the left-hand section, in the front, waving a huge flag
of Colombia (today is their National Day of Independence). Before this got started,
the fans went wild taking photos of all the contestants, who were in the front section
of the stage.
After this was over with, and we were not NEEDED anymore, the guards started screaming for us
to leave. Lupita Jones of Mexico and Miss Universe of 1991, was besieged by the
fans who were snapping away; at this time, I understand a security guard has said,
"I don't care if she was a Miss Universe. She has to leave." What a horrible way
to treat a former title holder! While in the lobby, another huge guard was
screaming, "You must all leave the premises now!" Talking about being
used and abused - this was it!
I realize that there has to be some order and control, but not this way. The fans
should be shown some respect and kindness, or am I asking for too much?
By the way, Lupita did look beautiful and like a real Miss Universe; her little son,
was with her. She was also besieged outside the auditorium for many photos, and
I wonder how one would feel about this, after so many years? She has a going
commercial for Clairol or Panteen shampoo, in print and also television.
Now we are getting into the nail-biting stage of the pageant, all wondering
and praying and hoping that their girl gets in. I spoke to a beautiful reporter
from Santa Cruz, Bolivia who told us, that Miss Bolivia has a lot of pressure,
and that everyone there is expecting a lot out of her. Good luck to her.
Everyone is in complete agreement that this is one of the hardest years to pick
the final 20, since there are so many beautiful and outstanding contestants this
year! When the fans are together, all that is spoken is about the pageant and
who is on whose lists.
Tomorrow night is the national director's meeting.

"...many felt that they did very well..."
Hello Rafa,
It was a day of floral deliveries today (Wednesday) at the Wilshire Grand Hotel.
The personal interviews were today and many felt that they did very well and
were welcomed by the judges.
I did see and have my photo taken with Porntip Nakhirunkanok, Miss Universe 1988,
who posed very happily with the fans, especially the crazed and happy Pinoy fans at
the hotel. Miss Colombia 1986 Patricia Lopez checked into the hotel; she has
done for a few years now, reporting on the pageant, for some news service in her
native Colombia. Last year's Miss Colombia Adriana Tarud is also there for a national
television station. During her on-camera reports, I was even interviewed, showing
a 1958 International Press badge and ribbon and the fox stole of Hillevi Rombin,
Miss Universe 1955. She asked me what I thought about this year's Miss Colombia and I replied:
"Of course, I know that she is your cousin, and must be very careful what I say,
but on Friday night, she looked like an Inca Queen." She was pleased with that comment!
I understand that the girls were in rehearsals all day, and tomorrow will be
the National Costume taping for the international telecast on Sunday.
Many of the national directors also checked into the hotel. Their formal
dinner-meeting will take place at the hotel, in the Cardini restaurant.
This is it for today.

"...the National Costume parade of delegates
was the very best
part of the evening!"
Hi Rafa,
Last night, the games began!
I was frazzled, the first hour of it. You see, I left my cell phone in the taxi,
and consider it lost, thus I am not able to contact you and the rest of the world
during this Miss Universe time! How sad, how we have all become addicted to
these modern gadgets and go to pieces when we don't have them? I will be sending
you smoke signals with any "Breaking News!"
First of all, there were not that many there, meaning that the Auditorium seats 6,000
people. There were mainly, Filipino, Mexican and Thai fan groups there rooting their
delegates on. It started pretty much on time, and was over about 10 PM, though it had
been announced that it would be ending at 11.
I did not think that the music for the bathing suit and evening gown segments had
enough energy to get the girls into it.
They were all beautiful. Some had more energy than others. There was one from the
islands who appeared to have been pissed off' I don't know if she did this on purpose
or what?
Of course, Mexico, the Philippines, Japan, Puerto Rico, Canada and Thailand had a
lot of applause and excitement from the audience. As always, there were only a few,
"Where did she get that gown from" comments.
I personally feel that the National Costume parade of delegates was the very best
part of the evening! Meaning, that the personality of many was shown through.
France had a Can-Can dress and was dancing like a natural dancer. Sweden had a
very sweet and authentic dress and was doing a hopping dance. Japan dressed like a
Samurai solider and when she took out her big sword, the audience went wild.
I understand that Puerto Rico's costume cost $25,000.00 and it looked like it.
One of them, can't recall her country, had a full skirt, and every time she turned
around, it had a different scene on the skirt part; it was wonderful and the audience
reacted to it. Miss Philippines looked wonderful in her rumba-style Maria Clara
white dress, and did a spirited thing when she opened her large, white fan, and
flirtily put it over her face! I think that the more simple and really nationalistic
the costumes, the more affected they are. The Las Vegas feather ones have seen their time and
should retire now. For some of them, like Guatemala - I do not even know how
they are packed and traveled with. Mexico's costume was so large that it had
a malfunction, and she came out later, than in alphabetical order.
Only GOD and the stars know who made the magic 20? Let's hope and pray,
that the best ones are on it?

"...this could be the best or worst experience for her..."
Dear Rafa,
I got to the hotel about 4:30 and there was only a handful of familiar MU faces.
I was able to have 'High Tea' with Canada's national director, Dennis Davila,
who was born in Nicaragua. He is also the executive producer of the Miss Nicaragua pageant
since 2001. For a few years, he sent the delegate for Nicaragua to the Miss International
Pageant in Tokyo. This is what I learned from him:
DD: This is my third (3rd) year as the National Director for Canada. Needless to say,
it's been most interesting and a learning experience for me!
WPJ: First of all, how did a Colombian dress designer (Miguel de la Torre), do the dress
for Natalie Glebova, the then Miss Canada, which she was crowned in?
DD: You see, Natalie was in the Miss Maja pageant which was held in early 2005,
in Colombia. She met Miguel, and he wanted her to wear one of his creations;
she phoned me to Canada and I said no, since she already had her chosen and thought
out, competition clothing. After this Maja pageant, we were in contact with Miguel
and sent him sketches and suggestions for what we wanted. This is how it all came about.
WPJ: Please, tell me, what emotions were you feeling as you were present at the
2005 MU in Bangkok, as Natalie made the 15 then 10 and the final 5?
DD: I was very pleased, when she made the 15 and more so, the 10 semifinalists,
knowing that the Canadian sponsors of the pageant were there, would see the sash of
Canada and bring the country to the forefront, and showing it to an international
television audience. When Miss Puerto Rico was announced, as the first runner-up,
I went into shock; it was amazing and everything was in a blur. I know now,
what one must feel when announced the winner of Miss Universe.
When Natalie won, it just wasn't her to win but also the complete Canadian
team, that was behind her.
After Natalie relinquishes her crown, next Sunday, 23 of July, she will
fly the following day to Bangkok, where she has already signed an exclusive
contract with the Thai beer company, Singha. There is a management team there
that she'll work for. I have all the confidence in her, and know that this is
only the beginning for her.
WPJ: Now, please tell me about this year's Miss Canada Alice Panikian?
DD: She's a runway model and has never been to a beauty contest.
WPJ: Did Miguel do her gown again, for this year's MU?
DD: Actually, we have 6 gowns to pick from and he did do 2 of them.
I'll just have to see what the stage set and colors look like, when I get
into the Shrine Auditorium. Then I will know which will be the one.
WPJ: What else do you do for her?
DD: We sent her to very good hairdressers, to try out the best ones for her,
then we have to teach her all the tricks, since she'll have to do them herself most of the
time during the pageant period. We want all the tools that she'll need to feel
comfortable and most important, independent. We also told her, that this could
be the best or worst experience for her and that it is all about attitude.
WPJ: Thank you Dennis, and it is wonderful seeing you again. (We were together,
at the Miss International pageants in 2000 & 2001 in Tokyo)
Tonight (7/16):
About 6 delegates, with their chaperons were off, to an exclusive Telemundo
interview and event: Venezuela, El Salvador, Brazil and Bolivia.
I cannot remember the other two, they were whisked off quickly. The security,
at the hotel now is in high gear.
The other beauties went quickly by - all of them beautiful, and smiled happily
at WE FANS. I was the only one, applauding for them, and many looked at me, with joy
in their eyes.
To my surprise, beautiful and personality filled, Miss Germany Natalie Ackermann,
presented me, as she was walking to her bus, the newly published Universal
Beauty Book in gratitude for my personal support. She autographed it for me,
and she also had 65 other signatures of this year's delegates. What a lovely
gesture, thoughtful gift and now another added piece of memorabilia.
I notice that Lia Ramos of the Philippines was wearing a two-piece, Mexican-looking,
cotton dress, with colorful flowers on it. Her hair was nicely blown dried.
The last one to get onto the bus with her chaperone was Miss Lebanon
Gabrielle
Bou Rached,
wearing demon pants and a white blouse, no make-up and eye glasses.
To me, her eyes looked worried-sadden; possibly, she had spoken to her loved ones in Lebanon,
and was told about the sadness that is occurring there now, that her country is now,
in the brink of war! My thoughts and prayers are with her and her countrymen!

"Colombia's Valerie Dominguez Tarud looked stunning
and has the face of an Inca Queen"
Hello Rafa,
I arrived at the hotel later today because I had some business to attend to this morning.
My friends Max and Carlos from Caracas arrived last night, as did a few of the
national directors.
Tonight the girls had their auction dinner with the lovely and most interesting
gifts that they brought with them. They started leaving the hotel at 5:30, in
single file, wearing evening gowns, and I must admit, one was prettier than the other.
Miss Germany Natalie Ackermann looked like a movie star, wearing the fox stole
that was awarded to Hillevi Rombin of Sweden and Miss Universe of 1955. It was
presented to her at her Coronation Ball on July 27th of 1955 in Long Beach.
After 51 years, the stole came back to the Miss Universe Pageant and I wonder
if Hillevi's spirit was with the it, and if she'll bring good fortune to Natalie?
Those who knew this were taking many photos of her wearing it, and she told me,
that she was excited wearing it. By the way, the stole is part of my private
collection. Go Natalie! And loads of luck to you.
As the other delegates passed me by and quickly, I did notice the beauty
of Miss Japan Kurara Chibana, and it has been years for me since I have seen
such a beautiful Japanese face, and I have wondered why? Colombia's Valerie
Dominguez Tarud (photo) looked stunning and has the face of an Inca Queen. Others
who stood out were Finland, Mexico, Australia, Canada, Lebanon (whose gown was
a bright blue, with a collar made of gold coins and looked like a belly dancer gown),
Bolivia who looks like a prettier Amelia Vega, Miss Universe of 2004.
El Salvador's Rebecca Iraheta wore a long black sheath dress; the back had
kris crosses of rhinestones, and she posed like a 'work it girl' model on the
runway in a Paris fashion show. I'm hopeful that they are all enjoying
themselves as I write this story.
Traveling with two Beauty Queens
This afternoon, I interviewed Alexander Gonzalez who traveled with Miss
Colombia and Miss Germany to Los Angeles.
I asked him, how and why did this come about?
He told me, "You see, we had to go to Bogota to have Natalie's national costume
and evening gowns made. The renowned 'high society' dress designer,
Amalin de Hazabun, did all the work and designs. Some of her work is
in the 50th anniversary of the Barbie Doll. She used fabrics of renowned
designers such as Marc Jacob and Valentino. She also does costumes for the Barranquilla
carnivals. A few of Natalie's gowns have Swaroski crystals on them."
"When we (her family and friends, also included) were at Bogota's El Dorado
International Airport, she was not wearing her sash, but very large, Jackie
Onassis-style sunglasses. Many thought that she was an actress, and after
she put on her Miss Germany sash, everyone asked to have photos taken with her.
Her mother and younger siblings live in Colombia."
At the Avianca 'First Class/Primera Clase' counter, many were standing around her,
and the attendants helped her with her carry-on luggage, and we were escorted into
the Avianca VIP lounge. Miss Colombia pageant president Raimundo Angulo was
in the lounge, with his Miss Colombia. He told Alexander that Natalie was
much prettier than she was when she competed for Miss Colombia in 2001, all
which was spoken in Spanish. This was the first time that the two Misses had
met. They both represented the department of Atlántico in that national pageant. The official
photographers of Avianca were in the lounge, taking photos of these two great
beauties, and the other guests got into the excitement and started to
applaud them both and wished them luck at the MU 2006 pageant!
As soon as the plane took off, the attendant, Enrique, gave all his attention as
possible to them.
Champagne kept being poured to everyone in the first class section,
and Natalie and Valerie only drank enough for the toast, knowing that
contestants are not allowed to drink in public.
They both were engaged in happy conversation, and felt like they were friends
for many years. Their new found friendship continues at the pageant.

"Germany, Miami and Venezuela were on the line!"
Hello Rafa,
I got to the hotel this morning at 10 and met up with Alexander Gonzalez and the brother
of Miss Germany, whose name is Oliver Ackermann, who has movie star looks. He flew
for 16 hours to Los Angeles. They were finishing up their breakfast in the Grill
Restaurant.
From there, I took them to the Fashion District to look for jewels for Miss Germany
Natalie Ackermann to wear for the first segment of the judging. It only took
two stores to go into to find them.
The delegates had their first rehearsal today with Scott Grossman. After the rehersal,
Scott went up to Natalie to introduce himself to her telling her that his parents are German.
He noticed that Natalie was making notes on what steps to take during the
dance number, and he was impressed with her and told her that if she needed any help,
that she not hesitate to ask him.
The gifts and souvenirs are starting to come, and I have already received some from the German
delegation. More memorabilia for my collection.
Yearly, at the pageant, when the family members and friends arrive, the excitement starts to grow.
- the real emotion of what an international pageant stands for. This is my 48th Miss Universe
Pageant, and the feeling still remains with me.
We got a call from Natalie, that the girls were having their lunch at the Italian restaurant, Cardini's, here
at the hotel, and that she wanted to see her brother Oliver. He had not seen her for sometime
and noticed how much weight she had lost.
When she and Oliver were reunited, Scott came to our table, and photos started snapping away.
Colombia also came to our table as did Venezuela. I had Carlos Jimenez of Miami Beach, Florida
on the phone, talking to his Miss El Salvador, but they could not talk at
length because she had to get back to rehearsals and her chaperone was directing her away.
Such is the life of a beauty pageant!
Over our coffee, Alexander's cell phone kept ringing. Germany, Miami and Venezuela were on the line!
I also ran into Miss Philippines Lian Ramos who gave me a warm smile and who was eating sensibly!
This is it for now. Until next mail, have a nice evening.

"They were amazed with the size of my collection..."
Hi Rafa, I hope you had a wonderful weekend.
My afternoon with Telemundo was quite trying; first, they were over an hour late,
though they did tell me that they would be
I had to do the interview in my high school Spanish, which is.......!?#%!@#&!!!
It went on for 2 hours. They were amazed with the size of my collection, even though I just
took out about 25% of it. My most interesting and loved items were shown and talked about.
I was told that this interview will be shown on the international telecast special,
that will be shown, one hour before the MU telecast on July 23rd.
As they were finishing up, my dear friend Husam Abedaker came over with
Alexander Gonzalez of Venezuela, and two new trainers, also from Venezuela -
Julio Cesar Cruz and Luisa Camero; these two, are the trainers and consultants
for Miss Poland Francys Sudnicka.
From my home, we drove to a shopping mall, as these three were looking for shoes
and other items, for their delegates.
Over dinner, at a local Mexican restaurant, Julio was telling us how he came about
to go from Caracas and Warsaw in his quest to work with the Miss Poland Organization.
Very interesting, to say the least. I was amazed, when they were telling me,
that they have all of the outfits of their girls in see-through plastic bags,
with shoes, clothes, jewelry, to be worn daily. I guess that with all going on
in the pageant schedule, this would be needed?
Later this week, many other fans and international directors will
be arriving here in Los Angeles; then the pageant will go into another
'crazy' mode.
Until my next report, stay well and happy.

"Lovely party, Paula!"
Dear Rafa,
The party at Tadashi's last night was very nice, but ran too late for me.
I drove to the Wilshire Grand Hotel, to meet up with Alexander Gonzalez who is the trainer for
Miss Germany Natalie Ackermann. Please note, he was also
the trainer for Amelia Vega, Miss Universe 2003 from the Dominican Republic and Miss
Ecuador 2004 Susana Rivadeneira. We were waiting for our friend
(and photographer for Critical Beauty) who was picking us up to drive us to the
Pasadena party.
The girls started to line up for the buses that would take them there. Jictzad Viña
of Venezuela was amongst the first group, ready to board their bus. She was dressed
very classic, crêpe de chine pants, a Channel-type jacket with sequins, a ruffle
blouse, and a three-strand pearl choker. Very elegant!
My friend Husam got there before any of the contestants left the hotel. We arrived at the
venue about 30 minutes before the girls and their chaperons did. The chaperones,
all dressed up, looked like they were going to their own beauty pageant!
Mr. Tadashi's house is located in a very exclusive enclave of Old Pasadena area.
I overheard him tell Husam that the house was built in 1956. As property prices
go here in Southern California, it must be worth in the multimillion range.
The party was set up in the pool area, even though many contestants and guests
were also in the house. Waiters in white jackets passed around different appetizers,
two bars were also set up. The entire venue was lined with votive candles and
fabulous and beautiful floral arrangements. The garden was like something out of
the tropics. The menu was very Asian, and the sweet table had miniature size
portions, along with very good coffee.
The MUO staffers were already there when we arrived. Valets were in front of
the house to park one's car. The NBC local channel 4 news van was also there,
as was the Telemundo crew.
When the contestants arrived, they walked in, single file and then the games began.
Some were in long dresses and others in cocktail dresses. Lia Ramos of the Philippines,
wore a dress to her knees, and her hair was in a pony tale. She was surprised
when I told her that I was the hairdresser to Gemma Cruz, Miss International 1964,
when she won here in Long Beach.
The contestants were just taking pictures of each other with the digital cameras.
I offered my services, and took some for them.
It was really hard to pick anyone out, since we were all pressed so closely
together. I was able to talk to the chaperone of the reigning Miss Universe,
Natalie Glebova, and thanked her again for allowing me to have my picture taken with
Natalie the night before. I actually introduced myself to her and she said,
"Oh yes, I have heard so much about you." Then she introduced me to Natalie;
she was so gracious and asked me about my interest and collection of the
pageant. Enough of me. By the way, I did take notice of Miss Japan Kurara Chibana (left),
and she is much prettier in person than in her photos. I gave all the girls
some slack, knowing that they are not even over their jet lag.
A I was also talking to one of the official hairdressers and make-up artists
who also do the other pageants, Miss Teen USA and Miss USA. I asked many questions about
the hair during the actual pageants. How they chose the styles, and if
they're under a lot of stress, and to my surprise, they said, NO! MUO president,
Paula Shugart passed by me and asked, "Are you having a nice time William?"
I responded, "Lovely party, Paula!"
I also noticed the arrival of legendary MU Choreographer Scott Grossman,
with his male companion, who is very Hollywood-looking! I'm sure that many
were taken aback, when they saw Scott!
About 10:30 Donald Trump and his beautiful wife Melania Knauss Trump arrived, along side of one
of the former MU contestants, also a great beauty, and her now husband.
They had their photos taken when they first arrived. They were greeted by MU
President Paula Shugart and the host for the evening, Tadashi. From there,
they all went into the group of contestants, then The Donald went to a higher
level of the house and spoke to the audience and thanked everyone for coming.
Then the contestants came up to them, in single file. The first one was the
reigning Miss Universe, and then Miss Philippines Lia Romero. The last one
in the line up was Miss Puerto Rico Zuleyka Rivera.
Shortly after that, the contestants boarded their buses for their trip to the
Wilshire Grand Hotel to get a good night's rest.
Later this afternoon, Telemundo International will come over for my interview.
I will let you readers know how it all went.
Until later, take care and Long Live Miss Universe!

"I must admit, dear readers, that she (Zuleyka Rivera) is a real stunner!"
Hello Rafa,
Today (Friday), I arrived at the almost empty hotel, at 3:30. The Telemundo film crew from Modesto,
California, were waiting around, to interview Miss Mexico Priscila Perales who finally
arrived an hour later.
All the filming and print photography happens in front of the Media Mall, with the official
Miss Universe logo, and sponsor image.
The other Telemundo film crew was waiting for the Hollywood Premier-type arrival of Miss Puerto Rico
Zuleyka Rivera. I soon found out that her flight would be one hour late.
As the other black towne car arrived, the crew thought it would be Puerto Rico. Not so.
It was the blonde Miss Russia Anna Litinova who graciously reacted to my official welcoming.
When Miss Puerto Rico finally arrived, the film camera and the
cameras of six fans started snapping away. A passerby would have thought that Hollywood
actress Angelina Jolie had arrived! Zuleyka had the poise, personality and charm of a high
society lady. Her sparkling eyes and beautiful smile wowed her fans. Her first words to the press,
spoken in Spanish, were, "I did not sleep a wink during the 8 hour flight. I am so excited
and happy to be here in Los Angeles for the Miss Universe Pageant!" I must admit, dear readers,
that she is a real stunner. She'll give the other contestants a run for their money.
I had read on one of the websites, that she was bringing 15 pieces of luggage. Not true.
She only had six. She is the only contestant to have arrived with two young and handsome men
(personal traveling assistants). She's beginning to sound like a member of royalty. She
and Mexico posed for the film crew, and photos and flash bulbs did not stop, snapping
at them both.
After that one-act play, I needed a cup of coffee, so I went to the coffee shop located
in the lobby area of the hotel. Two tables away were three young
gentlemen, and this is what I overheard as I was sipping my coffee:
- Miss Colombia Valerie Dominguez Tarud, was posing for her official glamour shooting,
she looked just like her cousin, Adriana Tarud, who was Miss Colombia 2005. By the way, her cousin,
will be here, covering the pageant for CRN of Colombia.
- That this year will be a very strong competition.
- Lebanon's' Gabrielle Bou Rached's evening gown is black-and-yellow, with sequins
and is very beautiful.
- Australia's Erin McNaught is a real sweetheart.
- The best 'cat walk' would have to go to Miss El Salvador Rebecca Iraheta. She
really works the runway.
- Miss Japan Kurara Chibana, is a real Japanese Princess, and very sweet too.
- Miss Nicaragua Cristiana Frixione Mendoza is also a very sweet and kind lady and
has become a mother hen, to the other Latina beauties.
- Miss Sri Lanka Jacqueline Fernandez, has the personality of former Miss Universe,
Brooke Lee.
- Miss Mexico Priscila Perales said that while she was having her official glamour
shots done, the photographer told her to make her lips to look like that sexy-and-sultry pose.
I also heard, from another fan, that last night, when Colombia and Miss Germany Natalie Ackermann,
arrived at the hotel, about 10 PM, Colombia said, "I was afraid that no one would be
here to welcome us." And that is such a sad feeling - but all is well that ends well.
As I was making my exit from the hotel, Miss Philippines Lia Andrea Ramos
was visiting with her mother and siblings. Her family lives here in the Valley,
which I did not know. I ask her what she would like to say to her fans in the
Philippines and she replied, "I am doing fine!"
The last one that I welcomed tonight was Miss Namibia Anna Nashandi who told me
that she was exhausted after her 26-hour flight. The last of the beauties
to arrive will do so tonight.
This is it for now. Until tomorrow night - everyone enjoy your weekend!
Truly yours,
William
P.S. - The crowning moment, for us fans tonight, was the appearance of the reigning
Miss Universe Natalie Glebova of Canada. We were all standing in front of
the desk of the hotel's concierge and here appeared Natalie, with her chaperone,
wearing her official Mikimoto crown, and three security guards. She was so gracious
and started to pose for us all, without any of us asking her to do so. At the end,
I spoke to her chaperone and told her that I was a friend of one of the MUO staff,
and if I could have my photo taken with her, and she said, "Well, of course!"
and told the guards, "this is the last one."
Also the chaperone of Miss Korea Joo-Hee Kim, allowed everyone to take her photo,
and made the comment, Tthis is what it is all about." I gave her the high sign,
and told her, "It is the fan base that has made the pageant a huge success,
for the last 55 years." And I hugged her in gratitude and thanked her!

"The craziness of an international pageant is setting in..."
Hello Rafa,
Today was very short for me. I did not stay for the after 4:30 arrivals, because
I have a formal dinner invitation tonight.
The craziness of an international pageant is setting in. I can already see it, in
the faces of many pageant organizers. I'm a blessed one, being able to enjoy it and
not having any stress or responsibility attached to it.
Miss Thailand Charm Onwarin Osathanond, arrived with a large entourage of chaperones,
news and film people, interviewing her, in front of the 2006 MU back drop, with mention
of one of the sponsors Singha Beer, which I understand, is a Thai product. (I also heard,
that this company, will be the sponsor of this year's Coronation Ball).
As Venezuela was hurriedly passing me by, I asked her chaperone, to ask her,
how many suitcases she brought with her. She said 5.
I was on my cell phone, with TELEMUNDO-Los Angeles, and they will come to my home,
on Monday morning, for an exclusive interview with me, wanting to focus, on the 55 years
history of the pageant and my collection of memorabilia.
Trinidad and Tobago Kenisha Thom, has a sparkling beauty about her. Her hair was up,
with a 36-inch, blue-black pony tale, and looks like a real beauty queen.
Miss Australia Erin McNaught, looked fresh as a daisy when she arrived at the hotel,
after her very long flight, and appeared very excited.
Miss USA Tara Conner looks just as she photographs, with a happy personality.
As many have commented about her height, she really does not look that way.
She carries herself with stature.
The beauty of Miss Brazil, Rafaela Zanella, looks just like her photos, a real stunner,
with a wow figure, flew for hours from Sao Paulo.
This is it for now. My next report will be after the Saturday private party,
for the contestants, to be held in Pasadena.
Take care,
William

CB's reporter William Prendiz de Jurado is part of MUO's welcoming committee
who greeted the delegates as they arrived at their Los Angeles hotel. William gives us the following report:
Hi Rafa!
LIVE FROM LOS ANGELES by WILLIAM PRENDIZ de JURADO
5 July 2006
I arrived at 10:30 to the Wilshire Grand Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
When I arrived in the lobby of the hotel, beautiful and stunning Miss Peru Fiorella Viñas
was sitting and chatting with her chaperone.
The crew from Telemundo-Los Angeles, was set up, not far away, grabbing all of the Latinas
for short interviews.
I was the 'Official Welcoming Committee' waiting for the girls, in the Wilshire Blvd. side of the
hotel, as their individual, Black Lincoln Towne Cars. I was there to open their door and to tell them,
"Welcome to Los Angeles and the Miss Universe Pageant," and that this experience will prove to be one
of the most exciting experience of their life. They were taken at once to their assigned chaperones.
As the contestants were registered at the front desk, the hotel had a gracious gesture and
presented them all, a long stem single red rose.
I understand Miss Slovenia Natasa Pinoza was the first to arrive - a very tall beauty,
with beautiful eyes, skin and long reddish hair.
The second one, whom I welcomed was Miss Northern Marinas Shequita Dlg. Bennett, wearing
a short orange dress, with a flower in her hair.
I recognized Miss Lebanon Gabrielle Bou Rached had traveled for 20 hours, via Paris to
Los Angeles.
Model looking Miss South Africa Thuli Sithole had flown for 24 hours, but looked ravishing,
had 6 suitcases, 3 carry ons and a short fur jacket. I was amazed about the jacket, because
it is summer her in LA; she told me that it is winter in South Africa.
Miss Mexico Priscila Perales has South Africia beat - 9 suitcases, 2 of which had to come via Super
Shuttle because there was no room in the luxury car. Fans greeted her at LAX and presented her with a huge,
beautiful, sweet-smelling bouquet of flowers.
At 4, for the early arrivals, hair and makeup, before their official photo for the program
book and swimsuit, and then their glamour shots. Before this, they were able to rest a while
and unpack themselves.
Towards the late afternoon, a group was expected, including Miss Philippines Lia Andrea Ramos.
When I opened the car door, a head was facing me, and I said, "Are you Miss Venezuela?"
And she said no with confidence. "I'm Miss Philippines!." And then I said, "Hello Lia. Mabuhay!
Kumusta?" And she was pleased. I asked her if she had come from Manila and she said no.
But from Bogota! She was groomed to perfection, wearing a made to order, beige color looking
two-piece pantsuit with her sash. When she alighted from her car, I announced to the
Telemundo filming crew, "Miss Philippines." Six fans were snapping away
with their cameras; it looked like the Academy Awards. I asked Lia if she had a
message for her many fans in the Philippines, and she said with great confidence,
"I'm happy to be here in Los Angeles, and want to show the world what the Philippines has!"
Shortly after that, a two-block long, white limo arrived, and when I opened the door, it
was Miss Venezuela Jictzad Viña,. All the cameras were on her, as though Elizabeth Taylor
had arrived. As I put my head into the limo, getting her make up bag and sun glasses, I noticed
that there was another delegate in there - Miss Aruba Melissa Lacle, another stunner.
I did not want Venezuela to outstage her, so I said loudly, "Here is Miss Aruba!" The cameras and flashed bulbs
started over kill. I then got into the middle of them and had my photos taken with them.
Note: Two MU assistants this year are Cristina Nardozzi, Miss Massachusetts USA 2005
and Jennifer Fairbank, Miss Hawaii USA 2005. Both are roommates, living the life in Los
Angeles, hoping to get into the entertainment industry.
After that 'one act' play, I went for dinner, and then called it a night.
Hopefully, tomorrow will be as exciting as it was today.
Sweet dreams to you all.
William

P.S.
Miss Ghana Angela Asare, arrived very quietly, and is a very tall stunner, as is
Miss Canada Alice Panikian, a much written about delegate, who was wearing blue jeans and a casual top.
Miss China Ying-hui Gao has a very wholesome, little girl look, tall also. She arrived with
a well-spoken English, traveling chaperone and her interpreter. She and two others asked permission
if they could take her out for dinner and their wish was granted, to my surprise!
Miss Trinidad and Tabago & Tobago Kenisha Thom was very friendly to everyone and happy to have arrived!
