TEREZA BUDKOVA - Miss Earth Czech Republic 2009

By David Natanawan for Critical Beauty

Please tell us something about yourself, your full name, age, height, vital stats, where you came from, educational information, your interests and hobbies and other important facts about yourself.

My name is Tereza Budková and I am going to reprezent Czech Republic at Miss Earth 2009. I am 176 cm tall and I am 19 years old. I live and study in Tábor. It´s really a nice small town about 80 kilometres from our beautiful capital city Prague. I am in last year on grammar school and I want to go to university after this high school. I love swimming, skiing and traveling. I have been to many interesting countries and I am really looking forward to see the Philippines.

Who influenced you to join your country’s national pageant prior to winning the title to represent your country at Miss Earth?

Ever since I was a little child I have taken great interest in pageant contests and I always wanted to win one of the crowns. When I was seven I managed to win Miss Hvezdicka Táborska (Star of the Tábor region). Last year I was surprised by my mother who told me that she signed me up for Ceská Miss (Czech Miss) and after a short indecision I agreed and went to Prague to try my luck. Now I don’t regret this at all and due to my success at this national contest I get the opportunity to reprezent our beautiful country at Miss Earth 2009.

How were you chosen to represent you country and what preparations have you done for the Miss Earth 2009 competition?

My participation at Miss Earth 2009 is a result of my success at Czech Miss 2009. I became the 1.st Czech vicemiss and it is usually a girl from this position who is nominated to Miss Earth (if she is a suitable type for such a contest). I am almost ready for the contest. I have made an ecological project, gathered further information about the hosting country Philippines and prepared garments for the final evening. Of course, I have been following the news about the latest natural catastrophe in Philippines with worries and sympathy for the people.

What environmental platform do you want to pursue during the Miss Earth 2009 pageant and how would you help to pursue this platform?

I would like to work on the floods issue with focus on help care systems and liquidation of the damage consequences. I chose this particular area, because I have expereinced floods here in Czech Republic and I did realize during my cooperation with Adra (a volunteer organisation) the importance of immediate and direct help to the people with saving their lifes and consequently help with the liquidation of material and inmaterial damages. I would like to find out how these particular systems work in different countries and how it would be possible to : support organizations, which help people in difficult life situations caused by natural dissasters or transfer the experiences or even link up the various systems of help so that thehelp is faster and more effective.

Are you a member of any environmental organization or animal rights protection in your country?

Recently I am not a member of any ecological organisation or animal protection movement. I do try to support and cooperate with various humanitary organisations (for example Nadace Rakovina vec verejná (Cancer a public affair foundation, SIMP – solidarity, integration, motivation, support (pomoc) – help to dissabled people) and other events related to the floods in the Czech Republic. After finishing my High School studies, I would like to participate more actively in this field. I want to join the international organisation Adra, which I consider to be one of the best organised help to various projects. Out of the Czech ecological organisation I’m mostly addressed by Hnutí DUHA (Rainbow movement) (www.hnutiduha.cz/home.php). Hnutí DUHA proposes and promotes solutions, which enable to reduce pollution and waste production, lower the contamination of food and water by toxic pollutants, protect the wildlife and preserve the natural character of land and to prevent global climate changes. Hnutí DUHA is a Czech member of biggest international federation of ecological organizations Friends of Earth and interational networks. I will most definitelly choose one of these areas to actively work on.

Do you have any idea about the host country, Philippines? What are your impressions about the country? And what do you know about the Finals Night venue, the island of Boracay?

I got general geographical knowledge about Philippiness during my studies. The Philippines are an island state in Southest Asia, which is formed by more than 7 thousnad island in the Pacific ocean. The capital is Manila, which is almost 10.000 km far from our capital of Prague. After beeing nominated to Miss Earth 2009 I have tried to gather some further information about this country, about its inhabitants, nature, history and culture. From our point of view it‘s an exotic country because we don’t have access to the sea and due to climate conditions we have completely different fauna and flora. I have never visited this part of the world so I am really looking forward to stay in this country, where the real nature and nice people will surely surpass my dreams. The 9th year of Miss Earth Competition will take place in Ecoresort Boracay - Resort and Convention Center on island Boracay on 22th of November 2009. Almost 100 girls from all over the world will participate in the competition. During the Final night, the jury will first select 16, than 8 a finally 4 girls among which the winner will be chosen. The winner will be crowned by Miss Earth 2008, Karla Paul Henry from Philippines. Furthermore Miss Air, Miss Water and Miss Fire will be selected.

Have you heard about the recent disaster brought by typhoons Ondoy (Ketsana) and Pepeng (Parma) in the Philippines? How do you feel about the tragedy that befell some part of the Philippines due to these typhoons?

I have of course been watchin the natural catastrophies which happened in Philippines during September and October with worries and sadness. I was able to imagine what harms on human lifes and property was caused by typhoons Ketsana and Parma since our country has been stroke by floods this year. The damages done here are of course on a much smaller scale than in Philippines, where the floods took over 500 human lifes and a state of natural catastrophy has been pronounced. The floods were the worst ones over several decades. I wish to the people of these regions to have all the damages taken care of as soon as possible, so that they can return to their regular everyday lives.

With the recent disaster that happened in the Philippines and other parts of the world, do you think Miss Earth pageant is still relevant in promoting environmental awareness all over the world?

Yes I do think that since there is over 100 girls from different countries participating at Miss Earth and with the anticipated high Tv ratings all over the world, Miss Earth 2009 could help draw attention to ecological problems, natural catastrophies and their consequences, thus helping to solve these situation throught the humanitary help.

What do you think is the biggest environmental problem that our planet Earth is experiencing today? And how would you do your share to prevent this problem?

I think that lack of quality drinking water in various parts of the world is one of the biggest problems, caused by climate changes and rise of consumption as well as polution I personally come from a country that has sufficient resources of water, but I know that almost half of the world has problems with drinking water and these region become larger over time. I am interested in possible solutions of this problem, for example through projects that support low cost technologies for water purification. I personally contributed to a project which now practically everyone can support by purchaseing certain goods. From each sold item the company gives to the manufacturer of water purifying technology (the CSDW fund) a sum which represents the cost of one PUR pack, which cleans water for one person for one week. I am also saveing drinkable water in my personal life, as well as promoting water savings to others, since we all have to start helping in our own homes.

If you win the Miss Earth title, how would you use your title to promote environmental awareness all over the world?

The environmental problems are a wide area of specific problems. In any case I will always try to promote awareness and shared responsibility of all people for current and furture state of nature and a sensitive use of natural resources. Concerning my age and popularity of this event especially among young people I would like to focus on the young generation. I am ready to do all the necessery studies and consultations with specialists in order to be maximally effective at this. In case I succeed at Miss Earth I will promote these ideas in all my public appearances as well as help with fundraising for ecological projects. During natural catastrophies I will try to get help for those respective areas and people there.

Lastly, what is your message to all the people reading this interview?

I do belive that most people which will watch this beauty peagant want to have a society, whose economical progress preserves good environment for future generations. If you think that I do meet the criteria to become Miss Earth and if I held your interest in myself I will be grateful for your support. Thank you very much.
