KIRSTY NICHOL - Miss Earth England 2009

By David Natanawan for Critical Beauty

Please tell us something about yourself, your full name, age, height, vital stats, where you came from, educational information, your interests and hobbies and other important facts about yourself.

My name is Kirsty Nichol, and I am nineteen years of age. I stand 5 feet 8inches tall or 173 centimeters. My measurements are 32-24-34 and my shoe size is 5. My background and childhood years helped shape me into the young women I am today. I believe myself to be highly ambitious, affectionate with a fun sense of humour. Due to my father's job, I grew up frequently moving around England and other countries. It is for this reason I have grown into a true people person. I enjoy meeting new people from all walks of life, and have therefore chosen my country’s capital London as my home for the past 6 months.

In terms of my education I have achieved high academic grades throughout my life reflecting the high standards I set myself and am currently reading for a degree in English Language and Linguistics at Queen Mary University of London. I'm interested in travelling, seeing as much of the world as I possibly can and meeting new people along the way. Like many girls I enjoy socializing, listening to a variety of music, and shopping!

Who influenced you to join your country’s national pageant prior to winning the title to represent your country at Miss Earth?

I would say my main influence came from my mom, who may have not introduced me directly to pageantry but has always guided me in all aspects of life. Such guidance was in teaching me that you should always do what makes you happy, that there is never any harm in trying, and when you do try it should always be your best effort. I believe this guidance influenced me into pageantry as it is always something that I have had a keen interest in and consequently wanted to pursue.

How were you chosen to represent you country and what preparations have you done for the Miss Earth 2009 competition?

I was chosen to represent England through a national pageant. The pageant consisted of several elements, including an interview, evening gown section and finally a demonstration of my environmental credentials. This demonstration was shown through a documented “Green Project” in which I have been working with my local community to educate them on a greener lifestyle. I also had to make a recycled eco-outfit, mine was a bikini made completely out of leaves! I am thoroughly enjoying my preparations for Miss Earth and cannot wait to arrive in Manila to meet everyone. In terms of my preparations I have been adopting a healthy lifestyle, exercising at every opportunity, opting for nutritionally better foods and trying to resist my love of clotted cream fudge! I have also carefully selected my wardrobe sourcing great designers (my Mum is making my national costume!), searching for the perfect dresses and finding a suitcase big enough to fit everything in! Lastly I have been fully embracing my role as Miss Earth England spreading my environmental message of “A little goes a long way!”

If you could choose among the four elements: earth, air, water or fire, what would you like to be and why?

I would like to be fire as it certainly describes my personality best. I am warm, caring person, have a keen interest in today’s “hot” topics, and nobody can extinguish my burning desire to spread my environmental message!

What is your fashion sense and style? Who is your style icon and why?

In a word my fashion sense and style is simple. I like classic pieces that will not date and therefore enjoy investing into my wardrobe. I always opt for what is most flattering for me, highlighting my favourite personal features and try to stay away from season trends to maintain individuality! In terms of an icon, I would choose the unique style of Victoria Beckham who always appears to be well groomed and made an effort with her overall look. I particularly admire how Victoria Beckham combines designer pieces with high street retail, showing that you don’t need a big budget to look fabulous!

If you are an animal, what would you be and why would you like to be that animal?

If I were an animal I would be a rabbit! I have a pet house-rabbit and find them to be fun, energetic and sweet natured. I know that my rabbit always puts me in high-spirits and I too would love to have that effect on people!

What environmental platform do you want to pursue during the Miss Earth 2009 pageant and how would you help to pursue this platform?

My environmental platform is spreading the message “A Little Goes A Long Way!” I chose this message simply as it is one that everybody can get involved with, and therefore do their part within the environment. I have particularly targeted younger generations with my message by visiting schools and educating students about how through simple changes they can lead a greener lifestyle. I chose to work with and will continue to work with the younger generation in aid of my message as I truly believe they are the ones who will shape the earth’s environmental future.

Are you a member of any environmental organization or animal rights protection in your country?

I have recently joined the National Trust who work to preserve and protect the environment in a range of ways from practical conservation to teaching others about environmental conservation. Although there is no specific role involved, through my own work via my environmental message I have been continuing to promote environmental awareness. Particularly in terms of teaching, as previously mentioned I have been working with young people to guide them to a greener lifestyle.

Do you have any idea about the host country, Philippines? What are your impressions about the country? And what do you know about the Finals Night venue, the island of Boracay?

I have never visited the Philippines, but have heard so many amazing things about the country. The islands from what I have already seen look like they have spectacular natural features and I cannot wait to arrive in Manila! In terms of Finals night I have tried not to look too much into the venue as I don’t want to spoil the element of surprise when I finally arrive there!

Have you heard about the recent disaster brought by typhoons Ondoy (Ketsana) and Pepeng (Parma) in the Philippines? How do you feel about the tragedy that befell some part of the Philippines due to these typhoons?

I was simply devastated when I heard the news of the recent disaster. It is a true tragedy and my heart goes out to all of those people that have been affected.

With the recent disaster that happened in the Philippines and other parts of the world, do you think Miss Earth pageant is still relevant in promoting environmental awareness all over the world?

What the Miss Earth pageant does in promoting environmental awareness is truly remarkable. Although what has recently happened is a true tragedy it would be even more of a tragedy if Miss Earth no longer continued to promote environmental awareness. Even if Miss Earth can turn just one lifestyle greener it is still a tiny step towards a greater greener future that would not have been taken had the Miss Earth organization not been around.

What do you think is the biggest environmental problem that our planet Earth is experiencing today? And how would you do your share to prevent this problem?

I believe that lack of education on environmental awareness is a big problem facing our planet today. If people, particularly young people as those are the ones shaping our future, were better educated on how to lead a greener lifestyle then perhaps many environmental problems would be significantly reduced. I believe I am doing my share to prevent this problem through visiting schools to start a basic knowledge of the environment and how it can be preserved.

If you win the Miss Earth title, how would you use your title to promote environmental awareness all over the world?

If I was to win the title, I would campaign for environmental education to be implemented into national curriculums across the world. This campaign would tie in with my environmental message “A Little Goes A Long Way!” providing a basic knowledge that you don’t have to change your lifestyle drastically to improve your environmental credentials for example embarking upon public transport instead of taking your car. The beauty of the message is that in one way or another it can relate to eveyone…everyone can do their part in order to make a big difference!

Which of the two would you choose and why? Beautiful or Smart.

I would choose smart because people’s perceptions vary of what beauty actually is. In my eyes exterior beauty doesn’t last whereas intelligence does, and you can’t be an intellectual conversation!

City or countryside?

I am currently in the process of moving house. At the moment I live right in the city of London, and after several months here I have chosen to move outside of the city, to somewhere in London that is cleaner and greener!

Money or fame?

I would choose money. Money in the right hands can help others in need, buy a blanket for warmth, and put food on your table. Fame is simply here today gone tomorrow.

Blind or mute?

This is a tough one! I’m going to say mute as it would mean I could learn sign language which I find absolutely fascinating!

Hot or Cold?

Definitely hot! I don’t like the cold weather, people are happier when the sun is shining!

Past or Future?

I would choose the future as I believe you learn from the past and should always look forward to each day.

Boyfriend or Beauty Pageant Crown?

As much as I would love the crown! I would choose my boyfriend, he along with my family and friends are the most important people to me, and nothing material can replace that importance.

Lastly, what is your message to all the people reading this interview?

I would personally like to thank everyone for their continued support!
