MAGALIE THIERRY - Miss Earth France 2009

By David Natanawan for Critical Beauty

Please tell us something about yourself, your full name, age, height, vital stats, where you came from, educational information, your interests and hobbies and other important facts about yourself.

My name is Magalie Thierry, 22 years old, my height is 177 cm, I'm blond with blue eyes. I come from France but I have Spanish and German origins. I already passed my bachelor's degree in biology-ecology and I'm actually in my second year of Master's studies in biology-ecology to become a university teacher/researcher. My interests include studying flora and fauna, astronomy, traveling and modeling. I have been dancing since I was a child and I enjoy running. Regarding my qualities and defects, people generally say that I am a nice, sociable and open-minded person. My worst defect is to be angry easily, and I love to eat a lot, too!

Who influenced you to join your country’s national pageant prior to winning the title to represent your country at Miss Earth?

After my participation in Miss France 2006, the national pageant of my country, I thought about participating one day in an international pageant. I discovered that the Miss Earth pageant combined my two passions: my studies in biology-ecology and my experience in fashion and that's why I decided to compete in Miss Earth France which I won.

How were you chosen to represent you country and what preparations have you done for the Miss Earth 2009 competition?

I was chosen to represent my country during a national pageant in Paris, where we paraded in evening dress and swimsuit. I think my experience and my interests for ecology has convinced the jury and the spectators that I was the right girl. Since that moment, I prepare myself physically by playing sports and eating healthy foods. I've also consulted with various French designers and worked a lot on my ecological project.

If you could choose among the four elements: earth, air, water or fire, what would you like to be and why?

I don't think I can choose among the elements because each one is part of me! I have fire because of my temperament, water because my project seeks to promote the protection of the oceans, air because it is elusive like me, and earth because she needs our help.

What is your fashion sense and style? Who is your style icon and why?

I am very lucky because I think I live in the most fashionable country in the world and because my grandmother makes dresses that I want. For my style, I particularly enjoy light fabrics, and I find little black dresses very glamorous. For this reason, I would choose Coco Chanel as my style icon.

What environmental platform do you want to pursue during the Miss Earth 2009 pageant and how would you help to pursue this platform?

During Miss Earth 2009 pageant, I want to promote the protection of biodiversity of the oceans. I want to propose to the government of all countries that there are alternatives to overfishing. I would like to organize conferences to raise awareness on the consequences of the destruction of our Mother Earth and to propose simple actions we could do to protect her.

Are you a member of any environmental organization or animal rights protection in your country?

Yes, I am member of an environmental organization created by Lawrence Anthony, a famous ecologist, which is named The Earth Organization. I am the ambassador of this organization for France. I work actually on a project with this group to protect animals in the world in wartime.

Do you have any idea about the host country, Philippines? What are your impressions about the country? And what do you know about the Finals Night venue, the island of Boracay?

I have some ideas about the Philippines. I have read lot of books about this destination. I know that people are very friendly. By the way, in France we say that the Philippines is the land of smiles. I can't wait to meet Filipinos and to discover the different landscapes, Boracay is one of the most beautiful islands in the world. I think that the final night will be full of surprises, both unforgettable and magical.

Have you heard about the recent disaster brought by typhoons Ondoy (Ketsana) and Pepeng (Parma) in the Philippines? How do you feel about the tragedy that befell some part of the Philippines due to these typhoons?

Yes, I have heard about it. I am very sad because Filipinos lost members of their families, their homes, and a part of their lives disappeared with those typhoons. I would love to help them in any way I can.

With the recent disaster that happened in the Philippines and other parts of the world, do you think Miss Earth pageant is still relevant in promoting environmental awareness all over the world?

I know that what happened is a terrible thing but life must go on. Miss Earth pageant brings a glimmer of hope, even if we cannot rebuild what has been destroyed we can try to change attitudes about the environment and thus prevent such disasters from happening again. Indeed, many studies show that the multiplication of these natural disasters is the result of the destruction of our planet.

What do you think is the biggest environmental problem that our planet Earth is experiencing today? And how would you do your share to prevent this problem?

I think that the worst environmental problem has yet to come. There are certainly cries of alarm. I can make every effort to change people's attitude and to propose alternatives for self-sustainability. We cannot recapture Eden, but we can certainly make the planet a much better place to live today for us and for future generations.

If you win the Miss Earth title, how would you use your title to promote environmental awareness all over the world?

If I win the Miss Earth title, I would use my title in association with my knowledge and my experience in the field of ecology to influence governments and to educate the public about the negative consequences of environmental abuse. I would start by helping Filipinos who have been affected by the two typhoons.

Which of the two would you choose and why? Beautiful or Smart.

Smart because beauty is fleeting.

City or countryside?

Countryside. In fact, I live in a little village, thus I am in harmony with nature away from urban pollution.

Money or fame?

Fame! You can use it to call attention to your environmental cause and influence people to join you in promoting your cause.

Blind or mute?

Mute because if I were blind I would not be able to see the beauty of our planet.

Love life or beauty pageant crown?

Love life because life is short, but a beauty pageant crown is an achievement for a Miss like me and would make my life more meaningful.

Lastly, what is your message to all the people reading this interview?

I know that Miss Earth is essentially a beauty contest so I prepare myself for that while remaining in harmony with our planet. Beauty is important, but it is also fleeting and inefficient to save the earth. With my strong background in biology and ecology, I am determined to make a real change for Mother Earth, and that's why I need your support to win the crown. I can't wait to be in Manila! See you soon!
