CATHERINE MUTURI - Miss Earth Kenya 2009
By David Natanawan for Critical Beauty
Please tell us something about yourself, your full name, age, height, vital stats, where you came from, educational
information, your interests and hobbies and other important facts about yourself.
My name is Catherine Emily Wanjiru Muturi and I am 24 years old. I am 5'10" and my measurements are 34C-24-35. I’m from
Kenya which is on the East of Africa. I was born and raised in Nairobi. the capital city of Kenya.
I went to primary, secondary and part of college in Kenya. I later transferred my credits to university of
Hawaii in USA where I majored in accounting. My interests are historical information and facts, geographical information
and nature, fashion, economy, old architecture and charity work. My hobbies are watching movies, reading books
and fashion magazines, walking, hiking, shopping, and helping to clean out the beaches as a volunteer.
As the eldest child in my family I have grown up having responsibilities and because of that it has made me
to be the person I am today, I’m strong-minded, responsible, reliable, hard working and very goal-oriented.
My friends think that I’m very passionate in whatever I’m involved with and I think they are right.
Who influenced you to join your country’s national pageant prior to winning the title to represent your country
at Miss Earth?
My national director Andy Abulime told me what Miss Earth does, and what kind of awareness it brings to
the world. Being from a country that has nature problems, I decided to join the pageant
How were you chosen to represent you country and what preparations have you done for the Miss Earth 2009
competition?
My national director appointed me to represent Kenya at the pageant since I have previously represented Kenya
at other international pageants. I have done a lot of research on the pageant. I have also become more aware of
the nature problems and started volunteering my time to help by bringing awareness to what some human kind behavior
would do to Mother Earth.
If you could choose among the four elements: earth, air, water or fire, what would you like to be and why?
I would like to be air, because it reflects my personality. Like the wind, I choose if I want to be a storm or a breeze.
And it doesn’t matter if the rest of the world is going at the opposite side, I have always decided by myself my directions in life.
What is your fashion sense and style? Who is your style icon and why?
I absolutely love fashion! I love being creative with clothes. Many people see fashion as superficial, it is so wrong!
Style is an easy and strong form of expression. As I said before, I would really like to see myself working in the fashion industry.
I have many inspirations. I get inspired of music artists, painters, photographers, movies, different cultures, people
on the street and the internet, especially bloggers. Bloggers are a new phenomenon in the fashion world, they are
getting more and more attention and some of them have become real fashion muses. An example is the Filipino blogger
BryanBoy, whose wicked style is truly inspirational for me. As you may understand I have lots of different style icons,
yet if I have to choose one I would say Karl Lagerfeld. His black and white outfit has become his signum and it will
never get out of style.
If you are an animal, what would you be and why would you like to be that animal?
A cheetah since it’s beautiful, fast and fierce.
What is your idea of fun? How do you enjoy yourself to have fun?
Hanging out with family and friends or helping out with a good cause.
How would you describe the following colors to a blind person - red, white, blue, yellow and green?
Red is the color of passion. White is the color of purity. Blue is the color of the a clear sky
or the oceans; it is also very calming. Yellow is the color that glows and represents friendship.
And green is the color of the forests and grass when it's spring.
What environmental platform do you want to pursue during the Miss Earth 2009 pageant and how would you help to
pursue this platform?
Forest destruction. I would help by letting people know the importance of forest, bring awareness to the people
on solutions that can be made by making alternatives of not cutting trees un necessarily. Encouraging people
to plant more trees and how to take care of them.

Are you a member of any environmental organization or animal rights protection in your country?
Not at the moment. However, someday I'd like to join an organization that works to prevent forest destruction and
to stop illegal hunting. My country has been suffering from these two major problems. The reason why I would
promote them is because Kenya as a tropical country and we get the rains through the water cycle. If it doesn’t rain,
then Kenya would suffer from drought. As for the illegal hunting, this involves killing elephants for their
tusks and lions, tigers, leopards and cheetahs for their skins. One of the main government incomes is through
safaris or wild tourism.
Do you have any idea about the host country, Philippines? What are your impressions about the country? And what do you know about
the Finals Night venue, the island of Boracay?
I have a lot of friends from the Philippines and I’m happy to be going there because of their food and the
friendly people. Boracay is a very beautiful island that I feel honored to be one of the delegates who will
get a chance to go there. I honestly think it’s a life time opportunity.
Have you heard about the recent disaster brought by typhoons Ondoy (Ketsana) and Pepeng (Parma) in the Philippines?
How do you feel about the tragedy that befell some part of the Philippines due to these typhoons?
Yes, I heard about the disaster. It was a major tragedy; it was really sad. I was watching it on CNN and my heart went
to the families that suffered and lost all they had.
With the recent disaster that happened in the Philippines and other parts of the world, do you think Miss Earth pageant is still
relevant in promoting environmental
awareness all over the world?
I think it's still relevant to promote the environmental awareness because it shows that even after such a
major disaster the Philippines still strongly believe in having a good environment all over the world no matter
the obstacles whether human kind or natural disasters.
What do you think is the biggest environmental problem that our planet Earth is experiencing today? And how would you do
your share to prevent this problem?
Pollution. This includes all kinds of pollution, water, air and environmental. As for the water pollution I would make
a point of throwing all the trash that I carried to the beach, put them in a trash can or somewhere appropriate. Also, I
would not throw anything on the water while on a yatch. As for the air pollution, I would drive and encourage
other people to drive hybrid vehicles. As for environmental pollution, I would make a point of recycling,
throwing trash where appropriate and not walking on grass or start unnecessary fires.
If you win the Miss Earth title, how would you use your title to promote environmental awareness all over the world?
I would use the title by starting an organization that would help to solve some of the most common environmental
problems that people do and they are not aware of them that they harm the world. For example telling people how
using hand dryers in the bathroom would save a lot of trees. Recycling would not only save them money but make the
world a better place.
Which of the two would you choose and why? Beautiful or Smart.
Smart definitely. Beauty can take you as far as nowhere while I believe using your brain can land you to places
that you have never dreamed of.
City or countryside?
City, because I'm more of a city girl and I know it has the worst kind of pollution but it’s also very convenient
and easy to maneuver.
Money or fame?
Money. It makes your life comfortable and you get to do whatever you want.
Deaf or mute?
Deaf. None of the two is a good thing but being deaf you can communicate by signs and you can lip read.
Hot or Cold?
Cold. I can wear warm outfits and cook warm meals and take hot drinks. As for hot you cant wear or remove anything to get rid of it.
Past or Future?
Future. It might be unknown, but it might be a better experience in life than what you have already gone through.
Boyfriend or beauty pageant crown?
Beauty pageant crown. I believe there is time for everything and I think a crown is a once in a lifetime experience
and everything else comes later.
Lastly, what is your message to all the people reading this interview?
I would like to tell them to treat Mother Earth like one of their important documents or personal items that
they value the most. There is no other Earth other than this so we have to value it and protect it as mothers
protect their children. If there is anything we can avoid damaging it we should. I would urge everyone to take
a step and protect what good is remaining of this planet
