GIULIA OLSSON - Miss Earth Sweden 2009
By David Natanawan for Critical Beauty
Please tell us something about yourself, your full name, age, height, vital stats, where you came from, educational
information, your interests and hobbies and other important facts about yourself.
My name is Giulia Olsson, I'm 18 years old and 176 centimeters tall. I was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in the year 1990. When I was 7
I moved with my mom to Italy. I lived in Rome, for 8 years, where I went to a Catholic school. I developed a passion for dance,
and I studied ballet for two years at the prestigious ballet school Accademia Nazionale di Danza. I also went to the modeling
school Talent, where I learned how to do the catwalk. I love to travel and explore different cultures. I speak fluentl Swedish,
Italian and Spanish.
I’ve always been an artistic person with a passion for all form of arts. I like to express my creativity
in many ways. I express myself by painting, dancing and photographing. I also like to express myself with clothes.
I enjoy to experiment with different styles and in the future I would really like to see myself working in the fashion industry.
I would love to be a designer and make clothes out of organic fabric. My dream is to make eco-friendly clothes more
glamorous and edgy and most of all I would like it to be economic, so that everybody could afford to buy them.
Personally I am very involved in climate problems and I try to get all my friends engaged. I always tell them of the
importance of taking care of our world and how selfish and stupid it is not to care!
Who influenced you to join your country’s national pageant prior to winning the title to represent your country at Miss Earth?
My family influenced me, especially my father, who is very aware of the environment. My father grown up in the Swedish
countryside, his contact with nature formed him as the person he is today. My father loves nature and this has been
passed along in me.
How were you chosen to represent you country and what preparations have you done for the Miss Earth 2009
competition?
I was first chosen to represent my region, Stockholm, with an internet based interview. Then we had the finale,
where I had to compete with the other regions. We had to go a fashion show in bikini and in gown, and we answered at
the judges' questions. I am preparing myself in many ways. I am answering press questions, I am taking new pictures for
my portfolio, choosing the clothes I will take with me to the Philippines, doing researches on the Philippines, and I
am now working on my talent performance.
If you could choose among the four elements: earth, air, water or fire, what would you like to be and why?
I would like to be air, because it reflects my personality. Like the wind, I choose if I want to be a storm or a breeze.
And it doesn’t matter if the rest of the world is going at the opposite side, I have always decided by myself my directions in life.
What is your fashion sense and style? Who is your style icon and why?
I absolutely love fashion! I love being creative with clothes. Many people see fashion as superficial, it is so wrong!
Style is an easy and strong form of expression. As I said before, I would really like to see myself working in the fashion industry.
I have many inspirations. I get inspired of music artists, painters, photographers, movies, different cultures, people
on the street and the internet, especially bloggers. Bloggers are a new phenomenon in the fashion world, they are
getting more and more attention and some of them have become real fashion muses. An example is the Filipino blogger
BryanBoy, whose wicked style is truly inspirational for me. As you may understand I have lots of different style icons,
yet if I have to choose one I would say Karl Lagerfeld. His black and white outfit has become his signum and it will
never get out of style.
If you are an animal, what would you be and why would you like to be that animal?
I would be a giraffe because they are so elegant and peaceful. It is a really graceful animal and they are vegetarians
and absolutely harmless.
What environmental platform do you want to pursue during the Miss Earth 2009 pageant and how would you help to
pursue this platform?
I want to encourage people to be more active and caring. I want to teach different methods how to contribute to
help reduce global warming. Teach how to reduce the demand for fossil fuels, by using energy more wisely. There
is a big variety of small things we can do, for example recycling, using less heat and air condition, driving less
and smarter. They are easy daily tasks that truly make a difference.
GIULIA STRUTTING ON THE RUNWAY
Are you a member of any environmental organization or animal rights protection in your country?
No I am not, but I would really like to be part of the organization Greenpeace. It’s a Swedish organization that fights
against pollution. I want to be active in this organization because I want the world to be in ecological balance.
Do you have any idea about the host country, Philippines? What are your impressions about the country? And what do you know about
the Finals Night venue, the island of Boracay?
I have a good impression of the Philippines it seems a country full of culture, and the citizens seems very hospital.
I have heard that philippinos are extremely intelligent and that they are the happiest people on earth. The nature seems
magnificent and almost surreal, I am really seeing forward to visit the islands. I have heard that the Finals are going
to take place in an eco-village in the Boracay Isalnd. It is going to be a fantastic experience!
Have you heard about the recent disaster brought by typhoons Ondoy (Ketsana) and Pepeng (Parma) in the Philippines?
How do you feel about the tragedy that befell some part of the Philippines due to these typhoons?
Yes, and it really hurts. I saw on the news how devastating it was. I feel extremely sad for the people who are now homeless,
whom life were taken and the ones who have lost someone near. It made me stop and think, and appreciate more life.
Because life should never be taken for granted. I give my heart, and my prayers to those whom were greatly affected by this tragedy.
With the recent disaster that happened in the Philippines and other parts of the world, do you think Miss Earth pageant is still
relevant in promoting environmental
awareness all over the world?
Yes, absolutely. Now more than ever! As I said we take often life and environment for granted, and those tragedies make
us understand that the world we live in is priceless. Miss Earth is extremely relevant, because it is an entertaining
method to gain interest from people of all ages and make them aware of our environment. Beauty is powerful and it
is a brilliant method to inspire others to collaborate for a greener future.
What do you think is the biggest environmental problem that our planet Earth is experiencing today? And how would you do
your share to prevent this problem?
There are many problems, still I think that the biggest one right now is global warming. Of course, I would like
USA to sign the Kyoto protocol. There are plenty of other ways to help our environment, starting with ourselves.
Every individual has the power to make a change.
If you win the Miss Earth title, how would you use your title to promote environmental awareness all over the world?
I would mostly concentrate on teaching the young generation how care about the environment and how to preserve it.
I would start campaigns and visit schools and orphanages. I would also like to help the sexually abused children,
and the victims of typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.
Which of the two would you choose and why? Beautiful or Smart.
I would choose smart, because beauty fades away while intelligence lasts forever.
City or countryside?
I am a city girl, however I would love to live in the countryside. The country is beautiful and to be in contact with
nature is very important for every person’s physic and mental health.
Money or fame?
Fame, because with fame you have the power to speak for your rights and your beliefs and make your voice heard.
Hot or Cold?
Cold, because I love snow.
Past or Future?
Future! You should never live in the past, The most important is to do the best out of the present
so you can archive your goals in the future.
Love life or beauty pageant crown?
Love life! If you do not love life you are never going to be truly happy. No matter how successful your life is
the most important is to love your life, yourself and everybody near you.
Lastly, what is your message to all the people reading this interview?
To be aware of the environment is easy. Try to do your best every day, and try to be an inspiration to your friends.
Remember yourself that small efforts can make a big difference. Follow Miss Earth, and me,
to get daily inspiration on how to contribute for a better world. Because a greener world means healthier population!
