Sarah Cosic - Miss Croatia Universe 2009

By: Héctor Joaquín Colón González for Critical Beauty & Héctor Joaquín Blog

Tell us something about your family, your childhood and your experience in beauty pageants.

I was raised in a loving and carring family in Split, the biggest town on Adriatic coast. My childhood was the most beautiful time so far, and I have so many memories. I grew up with my sisters and brother who taught me about sharing and enjoying life, and parents who taught me how to be responsible.

Miss Universe Croatia is my first beauty pageant and as it turned out, it was an excellent experience. Everything was well-organized, I met wonderful girls and had a chance to present myself in public. I'm certain I will represent my beautiful country gracefully and I'm very proud to be a part of the Miss Universe Organization.

What is your motto? What does that motto mean to you?

      Be yourself and have faith.

Some people say that pageants are degrading to women. What do you say to them?

I don' t think that pageants are degrading to women. I think there are other ways of degrading women like being less paid than men, and being treated as objects rather than as equal human beings. I think of beauty pageants as an opportunity for women where they can show beauty, talent and greatness of being a woman.

If you could change one thing about you, what would it be?

I wouldn't change anything about me for now, I accept myself as I am.

If you had the opportunity to meet a famous politician, what would you ask and why?

I would like to meet president of USA, Barack Obama, as well as the prime minister of Germany, Angela Merkel. Obama represents hope, change and a new future based on diversity, democracy and more humanity. Angela Merkel on the other hand is a strong and at the same time beautiful woman who is not afraid of her feminine side. She is respected, strong-willed and a role model for woman.

What is in your bag right now?

In my bag are money, cell phone, lipstick, keys, perfume.

What was your biggest reason to compete in Miss Croatia Universe?

I thought of it as an opportunity to be involved in a contest which was about beauty but more than that. I have read and heard about that contest for many years and it seemed like a solid platform to achieve success in a modeling world. Apart from that, I really wanted to feel and have that kind of experience which I will remember for my entire life. Representing my county in Miss Universe is a real opportunity and I am greatfull I have that tittle.

How are you preparing for the Miss Universe pageant?

I go to gym every day and I try to eat healthy food, a lot of fruit and vegetables. I also read a lot of books to improve my English. Since I have become Miss Croatia Universe I have a lot of obligations. I travel a lot, I have many shootings and I do a lot of fashion shows and commercials.

As Miss Croatia Universe, which charities do you support?

I did a lot of fashion shows to benefit sick children and children without parents. I love children very much and I think that we have to do everything to protect them.

What do you think are the most important qualities to win the Miss Universe crown?

Besides beauty, I believe Miss Universe should have compassion, strong will and good manners. She has to know where she is coming from and to be able to show that goodness and beauty recognizes no boundaries.

If you had the chance to promote Croatia abroad, what traits about your country would you emphasize and why?

Croatia has a beautiful coast. I am very proud to be born in the most beautiful city of Split, which is 1,700 years old. We have many great athletes in soccer, tennis. We also have fabulous food and wine.

How do you define the role of women in your country at this moment?

At this moment, women and men are almost equal and they have the same rights but it's a little bit easier for men to get a job, and there are less women in politics and in leadership positions in companies. People in Croatia appreciate women and very often the wife holds the family together. She takes care of the children, the house - everything.

What kind of profession would you like to pursue?

I would like to be a model, and later in life I would like to be succesful businesswoman. I want to be financially independent and to be able to care of myself and my family.

Do you think you deserve to be crowned Miss Universe on August 23rd in The Bahamas?

Certainly! I deserve to be crowned Miss Universe in the Bahamas!

How has your family influenced your life?

My family, especially my sisters, are my role model in life. I grew up with my sisters and brother who taught me about sharing and enjoying life, and parents who taught me how to be responsible and how to be a good and optimistic person.

If you had the opportunity to fulfill a dream for your country at this moment, what would it be and why?

At this moment I would like for the economic crisis to go away and that my country is accepted as a member of the European Union.
