Original Miss Universe Canada 2013 winner Denise Garrido is demoted to 4th place due to tabulation error

Denise Garrido - the morning after she was crowned Miss Universe Canada 2013

Just barely two days after she was crowned Miss Universe Canada 2013, Denise Garrido has been demoted to 3rd runner-up position due to a tabulation error.  Riza Santos,  26, who was 1st runner-up, has now been declared as the true winner. Beauties of Canada, the organizer of the pageant, has released the following statement:

The 2013 Miss Universe Canada pageant took place on Saturday, May 25 at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts in Toronto.  During the validation of the computerized scoring results (which occurs the following day), a typo was discovered in the top 5 entries, which significantly impacted the final results of the competition.  This is the first instance of this type of error in the 11 years that Beauties of Canada (BOC) has produced the Miss Universe Canada pageant.
This is an unfortunate circumstance where a human error was made, and in such a situation, as difficult as it is, it is only right to correct the error.  Therefore, the official results of Miss Universe Canada 2013 are as follows:
Miss Universe Canada 2013 Riza Santos (Calgary, AB)
1st runner-up Siera Bearchell (Moose Jaw, SK)
2nd runner-up Diana Martin (Mississauga, ON)
3rd runner-up Denise Garrido (Bradford, ON)
4th runner-up Michelle McKay (Sarnia, ON)
We would like to offer our sincere apology to Denise Garrido for this human error discovered while validating the results. Miss Garrido’s example and grace represents all we look for at Miss Universe Canada. We have no doubt she will continue to succeed in her endeavours and we wish her well. We truly hope she remains a strong part of the Miss Universe Canada Organization.
Beauties of Canada congratulates Riza Santos as the winner of Miss Universe Canada 2013 competition, and looks forward to working with her as she prepares to represent our country at Miss Universe 2013. BOC would also like to congratulate all the runners-up on their proper placements at the pageant, as well as the other 52 extraordinary young women who competed for the title in Toronto.

Riza Santos: from 1st runner-up to Miss Universe Canada 2013

It is indeed unfortunate that a tabulation error has shattered the dream of Denise Garrido of competing in Miss Universe 2013 pageant. When she won two days ago, she automatically made history by being the first woman in Canadian pageantry to have won three grand national titles (Miss Earth Canada 2008, Miss World Canada 2010, and Miss Universe Canada 2013). Now this record has been claimed by Riza Santos. Santos, like Garrido, boasts of two grand national titles under her belt (Miss Earth Canada 2006, Miss World Canada 2011). And now the Miss Universe Canada 2013 title has just been added to her accolades.

Miss America 2014 will be crowned without the Miss America theme song

“There she is, Miss America"... except this year’s winner won’t be hearing those words.
Due to a licensing dispute, Miss America 2013 will be crowned in September without the iconic “Miss America” song.
Miss America Organization vice president Sharon Pearce confirmed to the Press of Atlantic City that the familiar tune, played almost every year since 1955, will no longer be used at the pageant.
The dispute stems from a lawsuit filed by the late songwriter Bernie Wayne’s wife, who claimed the song was used without a proper license in 2011 and 2012.
For a few years in the 1980s, the “Miss America” song was silent during another contract dispute, and last year, the pageant played instrumental music instead for Laura Kaeppeler’s crowning. This year, organizers could also choose to use another tune like “Look at Her” and “Miss America the Beautiful.”
Wayne first wrote the song while sitting in a barber’s chair in 1955. In that year’s pageant, host Bert Parks sang it on the televised broadcast to winner Lee Meriwether. Before his death in 1993, Wayne also wrote the song “Blue Velvet,” as well as many other familiar jingles, commercial tunes, and television and movie songs.

Hinarani de Longeaux to represent France in Miss Universe 2013

Last Saturday, the Miss France Committee president Sylvie Tellier announced that Hinarani de Longeaux, who represented Tahiti in the 2013 Miss France competition and placed 1st runner-up, will officially represent France in the 2013 Miss Universe pageant. This information was taken from the French-language site, Lesnouvelles.pf, which also cites that the Miss Universe 2013 pageant will be held in Las Vegas on December 19th. Critical Beauty does not acknowledge the date and venue since no official statement has been released yet from the Miss Universe Organization. However, Tellier claims that the change was made due to schedule conflict. The Miss France 2014 pageant will be held on December 7th in Dijon and requires the presence of  the actual Miss France Marine Lorphelin.  Meanwhile, Lorphelin will compete in Miss World 2013 in September in Indonesia. This is the second year in a row that France is not sending the actual national titleholder to Miss Universe. In 2012, France was represented by Marie Payet, who was second runner-up to actual winner Delphine Wespiser.
